The rebirth of the Silk Road

Editor's note: The Silk Road was a historical route -- dating back to China's Han Dynasty (206 B.C. – 220 A.D.) -- known for its importance in the economic and cultural exchanges between East and West. It set out from China and ran all the way into Asia, Europe and Africa, extending more than 6,400 km. It once facilitated the development of different nations along the route, but its importance began to wane when sea routes became increasingly prominent in the 14th and 15th centuries.

China's President Xi Jinping proposed to create a Silk Road economic belt in his speech at Kazakhstan's Nazarbayev University on Sep.7, 2013. One month later, he proposed to rebuild the maritime Silk Road, a sea route that connected China and Asian and European nations by sea, during a visit to Indonesia. The two proposals are set to inaugurate a rebirth of the Silk Road.
