Khotse was born into a herdsman's family in 1969 in the Khotse
Township of Xiahe County, Gannan Prefecture in Gansu Province.
Khotse, the sixth boy of the family's 10 children, began herding
cattle at an early age. He loved watching white clouds floating in
the azure sky above the vast grassland.
His family couldn't afford to pay for his education and he often
sneaked into the local school. His parents noticed his love of
books and tried hard to support him. In two months, young Khotse
finished the first year of his primary education and was permitted
to skip into the next level.
Khotse felt a strong calling from Buddhism early on. The young
boy often built earth pagodas and chanted the six incantation words
of Buddhism. When he was 13, Khotse became a novice monk. Soon
after, Gungthang Tsang Rinpoche accepted the talented young man as
a disciple.
In 1984 he received the commandments. Through devoted studies he
became a teacher at the Gansu Buddhism Academy and taught there for
12 years.
As one of the most important secretaries of master Gungthang
Tsang Rinpoche, he had the chance to learn the most profound
essence of Buddhism.
Before the master passed away in 2000 at 74 he asked Khotse to
try to gather and compile all the important Tibetan works.
