The festival, hosted by the Embassy of Nepal in Beijing, aims to provide a new dimension to mark 2012, the year of China-Nepal Friendly Exchanges which was announced by state leaders of the two countries during Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Nepal last January.

Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Nepal's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Fu Ying, China's Vice Foreign Minister, jointly announced the start of the three-day festival, which will also feature an art exhibition with paintings from both countries' artists on September 17.

In his opening address, Shrestha said that the festival, together with the Chinese Cultural Festival held every two years in Kathmandu since 2001, will bring a new aspect to the strengthening of the long-standing cultural ties, bilateral relations and friendship between the two neighboring countries linked by the Himalayas.

Shrestha said: "We hope to enhance bilateral communication and exchange, not only on a government-to-government level, but also on a people-to-people level." He also expressed his wish to give continuity to the Nepal Cultural Festival in China.

A fine arts book, entitled "Friendship across the Himalayas", which embodies paintings from both nations' artists, was also unveiled at the opening ceremony.
