Eighteen years later, Deng's words were finally realized when former Prime Minister Zhu Rongji applied a series of housing reform measures in 1998 and most houses became commodities. Starting from the 1980s, the people's idea of relying on the government to get a home was challenged, and soon house prices became the first concern in many people's lives during the 1990s. Chinese people moved from the simple and crude apartments to brand new homes earned by their own hands.
