American actor Denzel Washington will receive the prestigious Donostia Award (Premio Donostia) at the forthcoming 62nd edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival, the organization announced on Wednesday.

The 59-year-old actor will also open the festival on Sept. 19 with his latest film "The Equalizer".

The Donostia Award is an honorific award which was first given in 1986 and given every year to one, or on occasions, more than one actor and on occasions to directors.

The first Donostia Award was given to Gregory Peck and the list of winners reads like a Hollywood A-list with actors and actresses such as Lauren Bacall, Susan Sarandon, Robert Michum, Michael Caine and Oliver Stone, with the 2013 Award given to Carmen Maura and Hugh Jackman.

Washington won an actor for Best Supporting Actor in the 1989 film "Glory" and was named Best Actor for his performance in "Training Day", while he was also nominated for his roles in "Cry Freedom", "Malcolm X", "The Hurricane" and "Flight".

Washington has won other awards during his long career, including two Golden Globes, a honorary BAFTA, as well as the Sundance Festival Tribute to Independent Vision Award.

The San Sebastian Film Festival is the most prestigious film festival in Spain, it runs during Sept. 19-27 this year and contains several sections, with a series of films competing for the Golden Shell award.
