Little Big City Beijing marks a big cultural collaboration between the Chinese and UK team. While the Chinese team made most of miniature models, the British teams made the model designs and special effects. It is also collaborated through historical and cultural Chinese experts from local Beijing universities and the University of Oxford China Studies department.
"It was very important that we built each element with great care and consideration of the historical and cultural context," said Darren Ward, Merlin Magic Making Production Delivery Department Models Delivery Manager, "The English team essentially brings in experience on the designs and technology that have been briefed by the Chinese team.”
He added, "A few years back we looked into the market, realizing there's really a gap – in that visitors find museum or historical experiences interesting but hard to digest. So, there's a demand and taste for it, but no one delivers it very well.”
Wang Rui said that the interactive miniature attraction is a very new concept in China and even in the world. "It is a new pattern in the market for city tourism," she said, pointing out that the attraction will be a family friendly venue which can educate children at the same time.
Li Xuemin, director of the tourism committee of Dongcheng District, Beijing, applauded the new attraction. "Little Big City Beijing will compensate the disadvantages of Beijing's world cultural heritage and tourist spots which can only be for plain sightseeing, without other interactive elements. The new attraction will be a new integration and improvement. Hopefully, tourists will be surprised and will have a higher quality experience,” Li said.
