A total of 812 directors submitted 840 films to join the fierce race, with only 16 films making their way to the final list of award winners. "A Lost Night" by Mao Yongsheng won the biggest prize of 2 million yuan. Banana Pictures CEO Wei Xiangdong said that the new directors are very young, as all were born between the 1980s and the late 1990s.
"The money is just an award, which doesn't mean we are kidnapping any of those directors to work for us ," Wang said. "I hope the money can encourage directors to do more films. We will provide a platform, opportunities and privileges for them to learn and develop as long as they are willing to grow with us."
Money is never a problem for Wang. "Others may want to invest 200 million yuan and get 1 billion yuan in return," he said, referencing amounts equal to US$31.55 million and US$157.79 million respectively. "But I already have 1 billion yuan, so I can take out 200 million yuan from it to do something for the film industry. I don't want an immediate return on the investment, I just wonder if I can do something for Chinese films."
