An international grassland song contest kicked off in Beijing on Tuesday. Before culminating in an award ceremony in August in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, it will collect songs for three months.

"Singing Grassland Songs - 2018 International Grassland Song Contest" is an important part of the 15th China Inner Mongolia Grassland Culture Festival. The organizers hope to make it an internationally-oriented, authoritative and influential event to explore and promote Inner Mongolian culture and grassland music.

As grasslands are a significant part of Chinese culture, the contest will showcase many great music pieces of the distinctive genre through collecting songs and performances from all over the world to demonstrate the colorful and diverse aspects of Chinese culture, the organizers said at a press conference attended by local government officials, renowned grassland musicians such as Dedema, Lasurong and Tengger as well as music educator Fu Lin.

"I hope that through our efforts, more people will be able to learn to sing grassland songs, love to sing grassland songs, spread grassland songs, and make classic grassland songs even more classic. And the new and good songs can also mark their places in history and become classics and also be sung throughout the country," said Bao Huercha, a Mongolian ethnic Chinese musician and the initiator of the contest.

The contest will has a three-month period to collect songs and to build a grassland music chart. The award ceremony of the contest will be held in Hohhot during the China Inner Mongolia Grassland Culture Festival.
