China's top TV host Li Yong dies of cancer

Prime Chinese TV host Li Yong died of cancer aged 50 on Oct. 25, his wife stated on Monday morning.

As a household name, the tragic news of Li's sudden death stunned hundreds of millions of Chinese viewers who are mourning him this morning. 

"After 17 months of anti-cancer treatment in the United States, at 5:20 a.m. on Oct. 25, 2018, I lost my love forever..." His wife Ha Wen wrote, without mentioning what type of cancer killed her husband. Ha's obituary post on her Weibo microblog account was retweeted 325,000 times and received 276,000 comments within two hours, many expressing disbelief. 

Among the mourners, numerous megastars and celebrities, such as actress Zhang Ziyi, TV host Ni Ping, singer and actor Jimmy Lin, comedian Pan Changjiang and businessman Wang Xiaofei, sent their condolences.

Li Yong, born on May 3, 1968 in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, rose to great fame as a top host for several hugely popular programs on China Central Television (CCTV) such as "Super 6+1," "Lucky 52," as well as many editions of the annual CCTV Spring Festival Gala with his flamboyant style. He was also the presenter of "The Voice of China" on Zhejiang Television in 2016. 

In 2005, he was named China's most valuable TV host with an estimated fortune of 420 million yuan (US$50.8 million in 2005 rates) by the World Economic Forum and the World Brand Lab.

He is survived by his wife Ha Wen, a TV producer and director, and a 16-year-old daughter.
