2. Detective Chinatown 2
Chen Sicheng's "Detective Chinatown 2" is another clear demonstration of how high a decent comedy can unleash its power during the bankable Spring Festival. The sequel to the 2015 smash blockbuster "Detective Chinatown" features diverse elements of comedy, action and suspense to mostly positive reviews. The cast and crew traveled to New York for 40 days to shoot the film, with the assistance of the SAG-AFTRA union. With a production budget of over 400 million yuan (US$63 million), the film eventually earned 3.39 billion yuan (US$541.4 million) in China's domestic market and became the 3rd highest-grossing film of all time in the country. As Warner Bros. Pictures also acquired the North American distribution rights, "Detective Chinatown 2" added nearly US$2 million to its total gross, attracting a large Chinese audience in America during the lunar New Year celebrations. After its success, actor-turned-director Chen is expecting to develop the project into a long-term franchise and expand its reach in the future.
