Chinese snail noodles seek recognition as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage

Authorities in Liuzhou City, Southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, said they are applying for national and UNESCO recognition of Luosifen, a local rice noodle specialty, as an intangible cultural heritage.

Beijing Daily reported that an Internet user from South Korea shared a photo of Luosifen on social media and suggested it be submitted for intangible cultural heritage status as a specialty of South Korea, saying the food features Korean ingredients and flavors such as ramen and a side dish of kimchi.

Luosifen is made from boiled rice noodles served in a soup made from a stock of river snails and pork bones stewed for hours with other ingredients. Diners can also add extra chili, onions or other flavors to taste.

The Liuzhou government has formed an office to supervise the industrial development of Luosifen.

It said Guangxi inscribed the traditional cooking techniques of Luosifen as an intangible cultural heritage as early as 2008. 

The city is now applying for recognition at national and UNESCO levels.
