An exhibition showcasing the work of postgraduates in Tsinghua University's Academy of Arts & Design opened on May 12.
More than 300 people attended the opening ceremony, including Lu Xiaobo, dean of the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University; Yang Dongjiang, vice dean of the Academy of Arts & Design; Li He, deputy secretary; Zang Yingchun, executive president of the Tsinghua Arts & Design Institute in Milan and director of the Department of Textile and Fashion Design; Zuo Jian'e, vice president of Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School; as well as other department directors, tutor representatives, graduates and distinguished guests from inside and outside the university. The ceremony was hosted by Yang Dongjiang.
Themed "Ask: Our Diverse World," the exhibition will run until June 2. At the opening ceremony, Lu Xiaobo delivered an address and declared the exhibition open. Liu Yi, a postgraduate student in the Department of Visual Communication Design, and Fan Yinliang, an associate professor in the Department of Industrial Design, spoke on behalf of the students taking part and the teachers, respectively.
Lu said this exhibition is of great significance as the first in-person exhibition of postgraduates' works since the epidemic outbreak. The Academy of Arts & Design has made great efforts to promote the high-level and deep interaction between art and science, cultivate top-notch talents with moral integrity, excellent skills, extraordinary knowledge and innovative spirit, lead the construction of the discipline, and serve the country and people's lives. It has provided its Tsinghua experience for building the top academy of fine arts in a comprehensive university and for China's higher art education to move toward the forefront of the world.
Liu said in addition to the exhibition, the online graduation works exhibition will also be officially launched on June 8. The change of media has inspired the students to think more comprehensively about how exhibitions are presented. These two types of exhibition will not only reflect their professional skills in a multi-dimensional way, but also demonstrate their keen attention to the living conditions of all human beings and social problems.
Liu added that the Academy of Arts and Design has given its students a very good starting-off point. While bearing in mind the original aims of being virtuous, skillful, erudite and innovative, and shouldering their teachers' hopes and expectations for them, they will continue to forge ahead, have the courage to innovate, and contribute their talents and wisdom to create better art for society and mankind.
Fan said that from the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China's founding to the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of China, and celebrating the 110th anniversary of Tsinghua University, all the academy's teachers and students have witnessed history and made professional contributions to remembering these important historical moments. Fan hoped that everyone develops their own career, growing independently and freely.
Sponsored by the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University and Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, the exhibition is being held in Hall 4 on the second floor, and Halls 7, 8 and 14 on the fourth floor of Tsinghua University Art Museum, as well as the exhibition halls in Areas A and B of the Academy of Arts & Design. More than 1,000 works by 200 graduates are on display in the exhibition.
The sudden coronavirus outbreak caused the teachers and students of the Academy of Arts & Design to think deeply about the times and life, and integrate these thoughts into their graduation creations, showing strong humanistic care and social responsibility. Students explore the diversity and realizability of art works in their own ways, and strive to present their creative talent and artistic ideals to the viewers. This fully reflects the passion and vitality of a new generation of artists and designers.
