Editor's Note:

The Spring Festival holiday is the most heated and lucrative film season for China's domestic productions, which often see huge profits and set box office records. With the much-anticipated sequel to China's highest-grossing film of all time, "The Battle at Lake Changjin," also hitting Chinese screens during the holiday, expectations for the season's box office potential are markedly high.

Presale tickets for eight films released in time for China's week-long Spring Festival holiday have already accrued total takings of more than 900 million yuan ($141.5 million), according to the box office tracker and big data platform Lighthouse, indicating Chinese audiences' enthusiasm for holiday entertainment. The Chinese film market will likely set numerous new box office records during the holiday and beyond. At the same time, online films and the Beijing Winter Olympics broadcast are also set to entertain the country, with many people due to stay put during the festival to help contain the epidemic resurgences.

Here, China.org.cn previews the films set for theatrical or online release during the Spring Festival holiday starting Feb. 1.

Han Guanhua, a famous associate and action choreographer of megastar Jackie Chan, marks his directorial debut with "12 Hours," a sci-fi action flick starring Aarif Lee and Qu Jingjing. The film is about a Matrix-like virtual world survival game where the protagonists are pitted against various challenges, including a terrifying monster. It will debut online on Tencent Video for streaming release, an increasingly popular means for holiday entertainment to reach the masses during the COVID-19 era.
