9. "New Kung Fu Cult Master" (Part 1 and Part 2)
Veteran Hong Kong director Wong Jing's 1993 adaptation of the classic wuxia novel "The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber" by the late author Louis Cha, also known as Jin Yong, had previously failed at the box office in the local film market and therefore scrapped plans for a sequel. Nevertheless, the first film has gained cult-classic status since its release. Nearly three decades later, Wong decided to reboot the sequel, which he co-directs with Keung Kwok-Man. Meanwhile, the lead protagonist Zhang Wuji is no longer played by kung fu icon Jet Li, but Raymond Lam instead. Also joining the cast are a number of young movie stars and veteran icons like Donnie Yen and Louis Koo. "New Kung Fu Cult Master" is likely to attract nostalgics and raises expectations for the series. However, it has also triggered fears that its new cast may not live up to the wuxia world Cha and his readers imagined. The film will skip theatrical release and go straight to several Chinese streaming platforms such as Youku in two parts on Jan. 31 and Feb. 3.
