Perhaps no other film is better suited to release at the start of the Year of the Tiger than the animated feature "Run, Tiger Run." The protagonist, an 11-year-old orphan, wears a signature tiger-head hat and has a Tiger-styled name – Hu Dun (literally "Tiger Cute") – tries his hand at becoming an established martial artist guard. Set during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), these "biaoshi" (martial artist guards) used to safeguard customers or escort valuable property during treacherous journeys to protect them from being ambushed by robbers. With the help of a former legendary swordsman, the unlikely duo sets their sites on dissolving a powerful gang. The animated star Hu Dun has already gained a 10-million-strong fanbase on the Douyin platform through 370 comedic short videos since his debut in 2018. The film, directed by Zou Yi and Stanley Tsang, captures the noble Chinese spirit, gives tribute to Chinese traditions and culture, and pays homage to the golden era of Hong Kong cinema, especially Tsang's idol, comedy icon Stephen Chow.
