The 79th annual Venice International Film Festival kicked off in Venice on Wednesday evening with a rich line-up that has drawn attention worldwide.

This year's event runs from Aug. 31 to Sept. 10. Twenty-three films will compete for the festival's highest prize, the Golden Lion.

The international jury of the main competition is presided by American actress Julianne Moore, an Oscar and Emmy winner. The jury, consisting of four men and three women this year, will assign the Golden Lion for Best Film and other official awards to the feature films in the main competition.

"We're all equally excited to be here and anxious to see the films. I'm very excited to get started," Moore told Xinhua at the festival's press conference on Wednesday.

French actress Catherine Deneuve was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement during the festival's opening night.

The event opened with the world premiere of "White Noise" by U.S. filmmaker Noah Baumbach, a movie adapted from Don DeLillo's 1985 novel of the same name.

Besides the films shown in the main competition, a varied list of works, including documentaries, short films, restored classic films and immersive projects, are also in the lineup.

"Mandala -- a Brief Moment in Time," a Chinese-French co-production, is among the 30 films to be screened in the Venice Immersive (extended reality) section. It took inspiration from Chinese mythology and traditional art, providing an immersive experience of self-exploration.
