2. Appreciating the moon
The custom of appreciating the moon has its origins in ancient moon worship, with this solemn sacrificial rite becoming a form of joyful entertainment. The earliest written records of people appreciating the moon in China date back to the Wei and Jin dynasties (220-420), but they were not accepted as a convention.
During the Tang dynasty (618-906), it was very popular to admire the moon on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, with many poets writing poems to celebrate the moon. On that night, the moon became full, which reflected the ordinary people's longing for reunion. Therefore, looking up at the full moon conveyed the joy of family reunion and the intense feeling of homesickness of those far from home.
