A new Chinese action thriller, "Wolf Pack," hit theaters Friday ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival, depicting a fictionalized account of China's mercenary soldiers who take on overseas missions to fight terrorists.
"Wolf Pack" is the directorial debut of Michael Chiang and revolves around the Wolf Pack squad, an elite anti-terrorist unit that is dispatched to take down a group of foreign terrorists who attempt to sabotage China's overseas natural gas fields. The project, which was formerly titled "Career as a Mercenary," includes acting from Zhang Jin, Aarif Lee, and Jiang Luxia.
Producer Lyu Jianmin said he actually wanted to make such a film before the release of Chinese tentpole "Wolf Warriors," a project which he also produced. "Only in the extreme environments shown in the film can true human nature be on thorough display," he said at the premiere in Beijing on Wednesday.
Director Chiang recalled preparing for the film and discovering that there are such unknown heroes guarding their motherland's interests around the world, which made him even more passionate about creating a story about them. He also noted that "Wolf Pack" fulfilled a dream for the film’s creators, allowing them to explore a new world and genre in the Chinese film industry.
The tense action scenes wowed audiences and delighted military fans at the premiere. Among the audience, there were several thrilled military, police, and security veterans.
Lin Mu, who owns a security company in South Africa, said he was excited to see the film and shared that he had encountered robbery in South Africa when he was younger. It was then that he decided to start a security business to guard China's national interests overseas, as well as overseas Chinese people and their property.
A retired Chinese armed policeman from the Snow Leopard Commando Unit, Ding Anjie, who once served as security in Chinese Embassy in Baghdad, said the film resonated with him. He added that besides the action and military weapons, which may provide entertaining elements, the film demonstrates how Chinese people protect China's resources and can ignite Chinese people's patriotism. "Remember, behind us is our great motherland. All retired veterans will return to fight anytime the motherland calls us."
