China's film market is rather cold right now, without enough appealing content. Therefore, industry insiders and movie fans are looking to the National Day holiday starting Oct. 1, which is usually a profitable week for the industry. Four new feature films and three animated films will be released during the holiday, each with the potential to boost the market.
"Home Coming"
"Home Coming," directed by Rao Xiaozhi and starring Zhang Yi and Wang Junkai, is the first film about a Chinese foreign evacuation from a diplomat's perspective. It tells the story of two unarmed Chinese diplomats who lose contact with their embassy in a fictional country in North Africa. They must lead 125 Chinese citizens to get home while facing chaos, riots, battlefields and the desert. The film has both thrills and touching moments and is also filmed for IMAX, which enhances the immersive experience of the film. The story is inspired by an evacuation event in Libya in 2011 when the Chinese embassy evacuated more than 30,000 Chinese nationals over 12 days. "Home Coming" was released nationwide on Sept. 30 and is leading the presale box office.
