The written word and tradition in China
Day 5 of the Spring Festival
The Chinese character 富 ("fu"), meaning wealthy or abundant, is the keyword for the fifth day of the Spring Festival. This year, it falls on Jan. 26.
As a traditional festival custom, worshiping the God of Fortune on the fifth day of the Spring Festival is another important activity that follows the celebrations on the first day. It is said that the fifth day of the first lunar month is the birthday of the God of Fortune. On the night before the God of Fortune's arrival, each family will set up a large banquet to celebrate his birthday. In the old days, businesses generally began to open on this day, hoping that the God of Fortune could bring wealth and luck. People often set off firecrackers, clean up the house, and work hard on this day, as it is believed that hard work and diligence can help people lead a good life.
