New romantic comedy "Too Beautiful to Lie" is leading the race among this weekend’s new releases, designed for telling love.
May 20, or "520," is significant among China's internet users as its pronunciation is similar to "I love you" in Chinese. It has been embraced as a day dedicated to expressing love for one's beloved, and many businesses have capitalized on this trend, marketing it as a new "Lovers' Day" to encourage consumer spending.
"Too Beautiful to Lie," a Chinese adaptation of the 2004 South Korean film of the same name, revolves around a con woman who pretends to be the girlfriend of the village chief's son. The family, convinced by her deception, warmly welcomes her into their lives. Directed by Yang Yuanhan, the film features Zhang Ruonan and Wu Yuhan in starring roles.
The film garnered positive feedback from audiences following its premiere on May 17. Over 223,000 people have expressed their eagerness to watch the film on May 20, and its presale at the box office is currently leading among the new competing films. It is only surpassed by "Fast X," the recently released Hollywood blockbuster that hit theaters on Wednesday.
Also making their debut during this weekend are the notable Japanese romantic film "The Last 10 Years" and several smaller-budget Chinese films, such as the romantic film "Three Days and Two Nights," the coming-of-age drama "Road to Growth," and the horror film "At Two Thirty."
