The Chongyang Festival, also known as the Double Ninth Festival, promotes respect and care for seniors nationwide. Traditionally, people climb mountains, eat rice cakes, drink chrysanthemum liquor and wear the zhuyu plant (Cornus officinalis) as symbols of warding off evil and wishing for longevity. On May 20, 2006, the festival was added to the inaugural list of national intangible cultural heritage.
