The film is a remake of Olivier Masset-Depasse's 2018 French-language film, originally adapted from Barbara Abel's 2012 novel "Mothers' Instinct." It delves deep into a dark narrative as two neighboring middle-class families, led by housewives Alice and Celine, enjoy a traditional lifestyle with successful husbands and sons of the same age in 1960s America. Their perfect harmony is abruptly shattered after a tragic accident, leading to a spiral of guilt, suspicion, and paranoia that threatens to unravel their sisterly bond.
Equally matched performances by Chastain and Hathaway, both Academy Awards winners, illuminate the hidden undercurrents of human nature in the film, promising to leave audiences stunned.
Delhomme, a veteran French cinematographer turned director, engaged with the Chinese audience during the film's Beijing premiere on Monday. He said he chose to make a simple, pure film for his directorial debut to enable close communication with the actors. He revealed that he drew inspiration from his idol, Alfred Hitchcock, while making the film and aimed to keep the audience guessing about the story's ending without misleading them.
"Mothers' Instinct" was released in theaters nationwide on May 24.
