The Russian stage play production "Eugene Onegin" will return to China for performances later this month and July, presenting the Chinese audience with the romance in Alexander Pushkin's 19th-century novel in verse.

Following its successful China tours in 2017 and 2019, this award-winning Russian classic will begin its new round of performances in Shanghai from June 20 to 23.

The play is a production of Russia's Vakhtangov State Academic Theater and was directed by late esteemed theater director Rimas Tuminas.

Marking its debut in Moscow in 2013, the play narrates the story of Eugene Onegin, a young St. Petersburg aristocrat who grows weary of high society life. He retreats to the countryside where he becomes entangled in a romantic relationship with a girl named Tatyana Larina.

The years 2024 and 2025 have been designated as the China-Russia Years of Culture, with a wide range of activities to be held to boost bilateral cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
