Universal Pictures' disaster epic "Twisters" took the top spot at the North American box office by storm with an estimated three-day cume of 80.5 million U.S. dollars on its opening weekend, figures from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

It's reportedly the biggest opening weekend ever for a disaster film and the third biggest opening weekend so far this year in North America.

"Twisters" is a standalone sequel to the 1996's box office hit "Twister." Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell as opposing forces who come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.

The film has earned an approval rating of 78 percent based on 272 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, and an "A-" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

"Twisters" also brought in an estimated 27.1 million dollars this weekend in 76 overseas markets, for an international cume of 42.7 million dollars through Sunday.

Universal and Illumination's animated comedy film "Despicable Me 4" moved to second place after two consecutive weeks as box office champ. The film tallied 23.8 million dollars this weekend for a North American total of 259.5 million dollars.

Rounding out the top three, Disney and Pixar's animated film "Inside Out 2" generated 12.8 million dollars on its sixth weekend. The film has grossed 596.4 million dollars in North America through Sunday.
