MNCs in Beijing
Beijing is a magnet for multinational companies, which have been increasing their investments into the mega-city since 1980. Beijing has become a top destination for well-known foreign corporations seeking to increase their presence in China, thanks to the city's numerous advantages, such as a desirable investment environment, favorable investment policies, a high concentration of high-tech talents and simplified approval procedures for investment projects. Multinationals first appeared in the capital city by setting up manufacturing facilities, then holding companies, followed by R&D centers and regional headquarters. By the end of June, 2012, multinationals had founded 639 offices and R&D centers throughout the city. And a total of 279 of Fortune's World 500 had invested in 637 projects here. Between January and June 2012, 13 of the world's 500 giants, including Amazon.com Inc, Merck Sharp & Dohme and JP Morgan Chase & Co, invested in 16 new projects under contracts worth US$1.44 billion, accounting for 23.5 percent of the city's total foreign investment during that period. More than 90 percent of the top 500 corporations' presences in Beijing enjoy marketing and procurement functions, and more than half are R&D-oriented. City officials have also focused on drawing regional headquarters to the city. Beijing is the country's leading municipality in staging a series of preferential policies, including financial aid, tax preferences and talent incentives, to attract multinationals to establish regional headquarters in the city. By the end of 2011, a total of 112 multinational corporations set up their regional headquarters here, with 30 new arrivals in 2011 alone, a new record. Until then, Beijing was home to 198 foreign-funded investment companies and 404 R&D centers, an increase of 15 and 31 over 2010, respectively. Many electronics and telecommunication magnates, including IBM, Lucent, Nortel Networks, Sony, Siemens, Canon, Epson, Samsung, LG Electronics, Nokia, ABB and Schneider Electric, have their regional headquarters based in Beijing. Benefiting from the accumulation of so many profitable companies, Beijing actually used US$7.1 billion in foreign capital in 2011, up 10.9 percent over 2010.
