Chinese people enjoy winter fun

The cold has made many people in China reluctant to go outside. But it has also offered some sources of entertainment, for those with an adventurous spirit... Let's find out how people in Beijing and Jilin are making the most of winter.

The cold has turned Beijing's lakes into natural rinks. This one is as large as 80 Olympic-sized pools, and Beijingers are enjoying this gift to its full extent.

Some of the fun is fierce and competitive, while some of it calls for cooperation.

Dashing down the 32-meter-long slide is worth the long climb, but it can also be a little frightening.

Here, snowball fights have gone way out of fashion.

"I've bought a pair of skating boots. This place is huge. And the price is reasonable."

Now let's head north to a much colder city, Jilin, in Northeast China's Jilin Province.

This year marks the 18th anniversary of the Jilin Rime Ice and Snow Festival.

Rime is a natural phenomenon where vapour condenses on tree branches and leaves, forming white ice crystals.

The Songhua River flowing across the city seldom freezes due to the warm waters upstream. The river's resulting vapors, when combined with these freezing temperatures, contribute to this natural wonder.

Tourists can also go for an outdoor hot spring bath, or head to one of the several well-equipped ski resorts near the city.
