Higher Education in Beijing
Universities in Beijing are widespread and diversified, offering all types of education to those wishing to learn. In total, there are 82 universities, with 36 managed by the central government, 36 managed by the Beijing Municipal Government, and 10 private schools. Eight universities, under the framework of the "985 Project" have the goal of becoming world-class universities. Twenty-six universities, under the framework of the "211 Project", have the goal of becoming world famous universities with high quality. The majors set at those universities cover all 11 scientific fields except military science. Now, there are 36 institutions able to confer the doctorate and 51 institutions able to confer the master's degree. In 2005, there are about 678,300 college students (including graduate students, undergraduate students, and international students) in Beijing, including 140,000 graduate students and 26,000 international students. In recent years, the admission rate of Beijing students taking the national college entrance exam has remained steady at around 70%, which is 10% higher than the national average level which was 53% in 2005. 69 universities accept international students, 15 universities have joint graduate school programs with foreign universities covering 27 different majors and 23 universities have joint undergraduate degrees with foreign universities covering 22 different majors. Currently, in Beijing's universities there are 1 National Lab, 31 State Key Labs, 41 Key Labs of Ministry of Education, 10 National Specialized Labs, 58 Labs of other ministries, 6 National Engineering Research Centers, 8 National Engineering Technology Research Centers and 9 Engineering Research Centers of Ministry of Education.
