Beijing has started design for a second civil airport in the city, according to a report by Beijing Times on Monday.

Such concepts as green energy and environmental protection will be highlighted, despite the fact that the final plan for the design is yet to be decided, Zhu Xiaodi, head of the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, said.

The report said that one of the initial-stage design drafts showed the new airport's terminal resembles an airplane with its two wings stretching out, as if ready to take off from the southern end of an invisible line dividing the city in half.

Beijing's plan to have a new airport built was approved by the State Council late last year, and its large-scale construction is expected to start next year, according to CAAC News, a newspaper affiliated to the civil administration.

The airport, which lies in the southern Daxing District and Hebei Province, will have seven runways, including one for military use. It's expected to handle 70 million passengers annually by 2025.
