The fireworks remains were significantly less during this year's Spring Festival holiday, which began on Feb. 10. The staff from the city’s sanitation sector had cleaned up 5,282.55 tons of fireworks debris by Friday, 331.83 tons less than during the same period last year.

Beijing also saw a decrease in fireworks sales and the number of people injured due to fireworks setting off. This decrease can partially be attributed to people's rising awareness of environmental protection after the city had been shrouded in thick clouds of smog for a long period of time last month.

According to sales people active in the city’s fireworks stalls, sales this year were much less than last year, despite the great discounts on offer.
