Garden expo to open in May

The Ninth China (Beijing) International Garden Expo will kick off on the western bank of the Yongding River on May 18.

The Ninth China (Beijing) International Garden Expo will kick off on the western bank of the Yongding River on May 18, it was announced Sunday at the finals of the Clothes Design Competition, which is part of the activities preceding the opening of the garden expo.

The expo will last for half a year. Covering an area of 513 hectares, it has attracted 60 cities from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, and 34 cities from 25 countries.

In the clothes design competition held on March 3, 13 outfits won the competition, selected from an overall 123 outfits. The winning clothes include outfits for different seasons and careers. Organizers will pick some of them to become the expo's staff uniform.

In order to provide information consultation, road guidance, order maintenance, disability services and language support services for visitors from all over the world, it recruited volunteers from across society.

By late February, volunteer registration numbers exceeded some 36,000. Among those helping out are 26,622 university students, accounting for 73.23 percent; and 118 are volunteers from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, accounting for 0.32 percent.
