The Sixth Beijing International RV and Camping Exhibition, a must-see event for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers, kicked off on March 21 in Beijing's Fangshan District.

The biannual event, initiated in 2010, is currently the country's largest and most well-known expo focusing on recreational vehicles and camping.

This year's four-day event proves a visual feast for outdoor activities and camping lovers, offering them great opportunities to explore nearly 400 RVs, as well as various RV accessories, motor homes, outdoor products, camping equipment, off-road vehicles, helicopters and luxury yachts, all produced by preeminent international companies.

The event attracts more than 100 renowned exhibitors from home and abroad, including Great Wall Motor, Jiangsu Zhongyi Auto, CenTech Specialty Vehicles, and Henan Futureshow, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Jayco, Knaus Tabbert, Hymer, Country Coach and Buerstner.

Nearly 300,000 visitors, both domestic and foreign, are expected to attend the expo.

The show, with an exhibition area of more than 50,000 square meters, is expected to ink deals worth a total of over 500 million yuan (US$79.4 million), 200 million (US$31.7 million) more than that achieved during the event's fifth edition held between August 8 and 12, 2012.

The rapid development of China's leisure industry in recent years has been boosting the consumption of recreational vehicles, a sector still lagging far behind that in developed countries, though.

By the end of 2011, the number of RVs owned by consumers in the United States, Germany and Japan reached 8.9 million, 1.4 million and 78,000, respectively.

In comparison, less than 10,000 RVs had been sold in China by the end of 2011, ten years after the Tianjin-based CenTech Specialty Vehicles developed the country's first RV with complete independent intellectual property rights in 2001. It's a figure that can be ignored when compared to the country's prominent auto consumption of more than 18.5 million for 2011 alone.

2,000 RVs were sold in China in 2012, up by 33.3 percent over 2011.

The event is hosted by the Beijing Tourism Development Commission, the People's Government of Fangshan and the Beijing and China RV & Camping Association.
