The Ninth China (Beijing) International Garden Expo will open its doors to the public in Yongding River bank of Fengtai District on May 18. China Garden Museum, the nation's first garden-themed museum, will be put into trial operation that same day.

A highlight of the expo and unlike any other museums, the expo museum is a so-called "living museum" which will exhibit the most essential parts of China's six classical gardens in the proportion of 1:1.

Located in the northwestern part of the expo, it covers a building area of 49,950 square meters. From the outside, it resembles the Shaanxi History Museum. It consists of six permanent exhibitions on three floors, including Chinese classical gardens, Chinese modern gardens and gardening techniques. Additionally, it will host a number of short-term exhibitions during the expo.

Among the six gardens, three belong to southern-style gardens and three of them are northern-type gardens. "The gardens are designed, built and maintained by local garden departments so as to guarantee the original materials and technologies," Wang Pengxun, deputy director of China Garden Museum Construction Preparation Headquarters Office, said.

The construction of the garden started in August of 2011 and is expected to be completed by mid-April.

Admission is free.
