Beijing launched a family garden competition in its Fengtai District on March 24, planning to hand out flower and vegetable seeds to more than 10,000 families across Chinese cities, including the capital, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

The garden competition, themed "Bring green gardens into daily life," is fun, easy and rewarding, as well as encouraging citizens to grow decorative plants at home and their family gardens more beautiful.

The competition, organized by the organizing committees of the Ninth China (Beijing) International Garden Expo, China Flower Association (CFA) and Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture (CHSLA), will run from March to October, 2013.

The activity includes two segments, namely a flower and vegetable growing competition at home and a family garden design contest themed "Life and scenery."

Citizens can apply for the seeds via the garden expo's microblog. They are encouraged to document the whole process through diaries, photos and videos, and share their experiences online. As a reward, they will get gifts worth 100 to 2,000 yuan.

While those who want to participate in the family garden design contest will undergo an audition, with 12 representatives selected to form four teams and foster their favorite family gardens in one exhibition area of the garden expo venue.

The top three winners will be designated as publicity ambassadors of the garden expo to start a tour of the world's most famous gardens, take part in international exchanges on horticulture and promote China's gardening essence.

The garden expo, which covers an area of 513 hectares, will open on May 15, showcasing 128 gardens created by designers from home and abroad. A total of more than 12 million types of plants and flora have been grown inside the exhibition's venues.
