A glimpse of Beijing's last public bath house
Shuangxingtang (Nanyuan Public Bath House), located in Nanyuan, Fengtai District of Beijing, the capital of China, is said to be the last public bath house in the city. "Showring," a comedy directed by Chinese director Zhang Yang, was shot at this public bath house, which was originally built in 1916. It only charges clients eight yuan (US$1.3), rather affordable compared with the booming spa centers which may cost citizens more than 100 yuan (US$15.9). Bathers can immerse themselves in the pool to their heart's content, take a shower, chat, play Chinese chess, drink tea, get a back rub, and so on. Beijing had 123 old public baths in 1935, showcasing the Beijingers' bath house culture of that era. [Xinhua]
