In numbers: Beijing's int'l garden expo

The 9th China (Beijing) International Garden Expo, to be held between May 18 and November 18 this year, is the largest-scaled event hosted by Beijing after the 2008 Olympic Games.

China.org.cn has compiled the ten main statistics regarding the fast-approaching expo.

   Land area: 513 hectares


The garden park covers a total land area of 513 hectares, including a vast land space of 267 hectares showcasing a kaleidoscope of 128 delicate gardens from home and abroad, as well as a picturesque waterscape spanning some 246 hectares. Its size is almost double that of the Summer Palace.

   Gardens: 128


The expo will exhibit a total of 128 gardens, including 47 gardens created by 69 Chinese cities and 32 created by 34 cities and institutions from 25 countries. The expo attracted a total of about 1 billion yuan (US$158.7 million) in investment from home and abroad, five times that for the seventh expo held in Jinan, Shandong Province, and four times that for the eighth expo held in Chongqing.

   Duration: 6 months

 

The 9th China (Beijing) International Garden Expo will last for six months between May and November, 2013.

   Green area and wetland: 147 hectares and 40 hectares

 

A 40-hectare wetland, which can reclaim 80,000 cubic meters of waste water per day, will help purify the water used inside the park and restore the ecological green belt of the Yongding River, known as the city's mother river.A total of 147 hectares of green area are constructed inside the garden park, with more than 12 million plants and flora grown there.

   Smoke and dust absorption: 100,000 tons

 

The expo garden park will effectively help purify the city's environment by absorbing 100,000 tons of smoke and dust a year, according to the municipal environmental protection authorities' assessment.

   Roads built for accessibility: 24.2 kilometers

 

About 24.2 kilometers of roads have been built nearby the garden park to support the upcoming expo and improve traffic conditions in the western area along the Yongding River. In addition, the western section of Subway Line 14 will be open on May 5 to serve visitors to the expo, who can transfer to Line 14 at Xiju Station of Line 10 and then get off at the Yuanboyuan Station (Garden Expo Park Station). A total of 30,000 temporary parking spaces have been set up surrounding the garden park.

   Catering services spots: 27

 

There are 27 catering services spots inside the garden park, offering both Chinese and Western fast food, as well as various local snacks.

   Expected number of visitors: 17 million

 

The expo is expected to welcome 17 million visitors, bringing in little over two billion yuan (US$ 317 million) in direct consumption.

   Volunteers: 10,000

 

A total of 10,000 volunteers will be selected from more than 50,000 applicants to serve visitors to the expo.

   Franchised commodities: more than 1,500

 

A total of more than 1,500 franchised commodities in 26 categories have been developed for the expo, including themed gifts, toys, precious metals and handicrafts.
