Nearly 140 expats in Beijing, including foreign diplomats and international students, enjoyed traditional Chinese folk music in late March in the concert hall of the China Conservatory.

Expats enjoy Chinese folk music and learn to play traditional Chinese musical instruments.

The event, the third session of this year's large-scale "Beijing Salon-Enjoy Beijing" cultural activity series, offered foreigners a great opportunity to learn more about the megacity's charming folk music and culture.

The Forbidden City Chamber Orchestra, an internationally-famed chamber orchestra composed of 11 renowned musicians from the conservatory, played a number of pieces of classical Chinese folk music, including Dance of Golden Snake, The Moon Reflected in Er-Quan and High Mountains and Flowing Water.

Professor Shen Cheng from the conservatory, a renowned master of Huqin (a traditional Chinese stringed musical instrument), introduced the history of China's traditional folk music and musical instruments.

The series, held on a monthly basis, is hosted by the Beijing Foreign Cultural Exchanges Center and Beijing This Month magazine. The first two activities were focused on Kunqu Opera and the Lantern Festival customs.
