Construction on 35.5 hectares of wetland within China (Beijing) International Garden Expo is now complete, according to a Fengtai District Bureau of Water Affairs announcement on Tuesday.

Located in the park's southeastern corner, the wetlands are built over a reclaimed landfill that starts from the International ExhibitorPark in the north, the JingShi (Beijing-Shijiazhuang) high-speed rail line in the west, the bank of the Yongding River in the east and the planned Meishikou Road in the south. The wetland will also function as a water purification system, where sewage will be treated and later deposited into the Expo Lake.

As Huo Zheng, an official with Fengtai District's Bureau of Water Affairs explains, the impurities in the sewage are filtered by volcanics, ceramicite and sands found in the wetland environment. After several cycles, the water quality will be up to standard. Every day the wetland can produce 0.1 million cubic meters of purified water.

The water purification project is designed as an ecological wetland park. More than thirty kinds of trees, aquatic plants and fish will make the wetland teem with life. Timber decks and gazebos have been erected for visitor to enjoy the natural scenery.
