Amid public demand for more nursing homes, Beijing will build the first large-scale nursing home in its southern region.

At present, all the four existing large-scale nursing homes are located in Northern Beiiing.

Liu Yinchun, Deputy Director of Beijing's Municipal Commission of Development and Reform, pledged the city will build more nursing homes to meet increased demand during an radio interview recently.

"The municipal government is placing more emphasis on China's aging population, and has drawn up a plan called "9064" to address the problem of an imbalanced population. Four percent of seniors will go to nursing homes at the municipal level, six percent will go to community nursing homes and ninety percent will stay in their homes," said Liu.

By 2015, nursing homes in Beijing will be able to provide 120 million beds across nursing homes in Beijing and every district must own at least one government-invested nursing home with more than four hundred beds.

Construction on the first large-scale nursing home in Panggezhuang in southern Beijing's Daxing District will start in June, featuring easy accessibility. Located near the Jingkai Expressway, it boasts convenient transportation infrastructure. The nursing home's total area measures 3,000 square meters and will provide more than 350 beds to Beijing's seniors. At the same time hospitals will be built nearby to meet medical need.

Liu also mentioned that the newly built nursing home is government-invested and will cater to low- and middle- income individuals.
