Chen Ruolin: 'I just want to do more for others'
Chen Ruolin, a retiree of China's Ministry of Public Security, has always cherished aspired to go good for those in need of help.
The 87-year-old CPC member is not rich. He leads a frugal life with his family in an old and worn-down apartment in Beijing, but he is by no means stingy toward others. Indeed, the charitable old man is always ready to give a helping hand to the needy. "I don't have too much time left now, and I just want to do more for those in need of help," the thin, small and plainly-dressed man said. In 2008, when the news came that a devastating earthquake had hit Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province, Chen decided to do something for those who were affected by the disaster. Chen spent all of his house relocation compensation, a total of 280,000 yuan, on children's books for the primary schools in the areas that were hit by the natural disaster. Chen, who was 82 years old at the time, visited Xidan Books Building countless times. He carefully selected hundreds of books he thought were useful, contacted the local civil affairs and finally sent the books to 61 primary schools in quake-affected areas in Sichuan. In March 2013, Chen decided that he wanted to donate his body to science after his death. In a letter he wrote to his Party branch committee, Chen said, "I will leave my remains for medical research. In fact, what I want to do the most is to donate my organs that can still be used for those in line for transplants when I die." |
