On the night of March 1, 2014, a violent terror attack took place at Kunming Railway Station, leaving many innocent civilians dead or injured. As a neurosurgeon with Beijing Tiantan Hospital, I was assigned to rush to Kunming to assist in the rescue at the city’s People’s Hospital, where nearly half the injured were being treated, over 70 percent of them suffering serious injuries. In the following eight days and nights, I worked at the hospital as head of the expert panel.

We spent 72 hours without a break rescuing a victim who was having difficulty breathing after sustaining a 7-centimeter wound in his heart during the attack.

Another victim, who was in extremely critical condition for head and neck injuries, developed diffuse brain swelling and needed to be operated on. Though it was an awfully difficult ventriculopuncture operation, we decisively took up the task and, stayed with the patient until late night after the operation until she regained her abilities to physically respond.

With our hard work, none of the injured died or developed complications. I felt the greatest pride when I saw the smile on the faces of the injured and knew how many families were able to be reunited because of us.
