Meizu Telecom Equipment Co's launch of a new flagship smartphone model yesterday is likely to trigger another round of fierce battle in China's smartphone market, the world's biggest.

Meizu's new MX4 phone features a 20 megapixel camera, 5.4-inch screen with full HD (high definition) and eight-core processor, and supports both GPS and the China-developed BeiDou navigation systems.

The MX4, able to run on China Mobile and China Unicom networks, will be available on September 20 at a starting price of 1,799 yuan (US$292) for the 16-gigabyte model, compared with arch rival Xiaomi 4 at 1,999 yuan .

Other top phone vendors, such as Samsung, Apple, Sony, HTC, Huawei, LG and Xiaomi, will also unveil or start selling their flagship models in September, a traditionally peak season for new phones.

Apple will launch its latest iPhone next week while Samsung and Sony are expected to unveil new phones today. Huawei, LG and HTC will also launch new models within one or two weeks.

Meizu also said it will launch third-party smart gadgets that connect with its new phones, allowing users to remotely control home appliances.
