Hong Kong has suspended the import of poultry meat and products (including poultry eggs) from the Dominican Republic with immediate effect to protect public health, the Center for Food Safety (CFS) said Friday.

The action was in view of a notification from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) about an outbreak of low pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza in the Dominican Republic, the CFS said.

A CFS spokesman said that since Hong Kong has not established any protocol with the Dominican Republic for imports of poultry meat and eggs, there is no import of such commodities from the country.

"The CFS has contacted the Dominican Republic authorities over the issue and will closely monitor information issued by the OIE on avian influenza outbreaks. Appropriate action will be taken in response to the development of the situation," the spokesman said.
