Leading ridesharing platform Didi Chuxing announced on Friday that it will launch its core service, Didi Express, in Melbourne, the second-largest city in Australia, on June 25, firming up its global reach in competition with Uber.

Didi released a statement that it plans to offer a series of packages to both drivers and riders. โ€œThe service will be launched with rigorous driver vetting mechanisms and pioneering safety features, including privacy number, 24/7 emergency phone support, and itinerary sharing,โ€ the company stated.

The company has been running a beta service around the smaller Australian city of Geelong over the last month and reports that driver recruitment in Melbourne began earlier this month.

The company also said its service will be operated locally through its wholly owned subsidiary in Australia.

Besides the Chinese mainland, Didi has also expanded its global stretch to Japan, Latin America, Hong Kong and Taiwan as the company ramps up for a multibillion-dollar initial public offering (IPO) that could take place as early as this year, according to multiple media reports.
