Beijing plans to extend its gigabit broadband access network across the city, becoming one of China's first gigabit cities.
The move would significantly increase broadband speed in more of Beijing's residential areas, with download speed up to 1 gigabit per second. This speed also coincide with that of the city's new 5G mobile network.
According to Beijing Unicom, a China Unicom Corp subsidiary, the Chinese capital is aiming to build a "5G and gigabit city" through new network infrastructures. In addition, existing users of fiber optics broadband will be able to upgrade for free.
After the trial run of gigabit broadband connection in Tongzhou district, Beijing Unicom is beginning to deploy gigabit coverage to more residential communities across the city. The carrier has offered a subscription plan at 299 yuan per month, which includes broadband, mobile, and IPTV services.
