Homebred seed varieties account for 95 percent of China's domestic seed market, a Chinese academician said.
Hu Peisong, academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director general of the China National Rice Research Institute, made the remarks at a seed industry forum in south China's Hainan Province Friday.
Currently, China has built three state-level seed breeding bases in Hainan, Gansu and Sichuan provinces.
The Chinese seed industry's innovation potential has improved significantly and the country has established a protection and utilization system for crop germplasm resources, according to Li Xinhai, head of the Biotechnology Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
