On Nov. 18, the topping-out ceremony for the Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) was held. It is a project constructed by China Overseas Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of China Sate Construction Engineering Corporation.
The design of the HKPM integrates contemporary Hong Kong urban culture, traditional Chinese visual arts, and traditional Chinese spatial design. The exterior wall of the project used a large number of inclined fair-faced concrete structures, with a slope of 1:3 and an area of 11,000 square meters.
In terms of the structure, the exterior wall adopted a large four-layer cantilever structure. The maximum cantilever length is 14.6 meters, which is composed of 100mm thick steel components. Each component weighs 12 metric tons. A total of 3,999 perforated curved aluminum plates were installed on the surface of the exterior wall. Most of the plates are transverse cones with varying degrees of curvatures.
The HKPM is scheduled for completion by late 2021 and will open to the public in mid-2022. Upon completion, the HKPM will bring a new artistic and cultural experience to people and tourists in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
