By next year, Beijing's 5G industry will attain revenues of about 200 billion yuan, further driving the information service industry as well as other new business formats such as telemedicine, ultra-high-definition video, and unmanned delivery. Eventually, these sectors are estimated to achieve an industrial scale worth trillions of yuan.

"As of the end of April, Beijing has launched 56,400 5G base stations, ranking first among cities across the country," said an official from the Beijing Communications Administration.

Beijing has built an invisible 5G information highway network to cover the capital, which is playing an increasing bigger role in fields such as unmanned delivery, autonomous vehicles, and telemedicine.

Autonomous driving requires a zero-error ultra-high-definition map, which transmits nearly one gigabyte of map data per second. The requirements can only be met by 5G's high speed and large bandwidth. So far, Meituan's unmanned delivery vehicles have been operated in the city's western Shougang Park and more than 20 communities in Shunyi district.

On May 4, Doctor Lin Jianhao from Peking University People's Hospital successfully performed a total hip replacement for a patient 3,000 kilometers away in Qamdo, southwest China's Tibet autonomous region. During the operation, Lin controlled a robot via China Telecom's 5G network.

Beijing is also upgrading its 5G network. Commercial use of the 5G standalone (SA) network has made great headway, providing citizens with a faster 5G experience. The latest measurements by Huawei and Beijing Unicom demonstrated average 5G downlink rates in Beijing as high as 626 Mbps, approximately six times the speed of 4G, and allowing a two-gigabyte game to be downloaded in 26 seconds.

5G is one of the strategic fulcrums of Beijing's digital economy. By accelerating the construction of a 5G industrial system beyond consumer-level applications, Beijing is expected to take the lead in high-quality development.

By focusing on its new 5G infrastructure construction, Beijing is advancing the implementation of the Beijing 5G Industry Development Action Plan (2019-2022). As such, many new application scenarios have been implemented in fields such as the industrial internet, smart cities, and ultra-high-definition video.

At present, the city has achieved 5G network coverage in the Capital Functional Core Area, the Beijing Municipal Administrative Center, and other important functional areas ahead of schedule.

Data shows that in 2019, the added value of Beijing's digital economy accounted for 38% of its GDP, ranking first in the country. Driven by new 5G technologies and applications, Beijing's digital economy has taken on more ambitious goals. According to Beijing's "14th Five-Year Plan," the city will be supported by new digital infrastructure with digital industrialization and industrial digitization as the core, and strive to build a global digital economy benchmark city.
