Beijing's key business districts see 35 million footfall during May Day holiday

During the five-day May Day holiday, Beijing demonstrated strong consumption potential, as the 60 key business districts in the capital saw footfall of 34.99 million, a 76.5% increase compared to the same period last year, according to data released by the Beijing Municipal Commerce Bureau.

Department stores, supermarkets, shopping malls, franchise stores, and e-commerce retailers in the city registered total sales revenue of 4.66 billion yuan ($666 million), up by 21% year on year.

Various commercial districts rolled out diverse promotional activities. According to statistics, customer traffic in the Dashilan shopping street in the Qianmen area, Di'anmenwai commercial district, Wangfujing commercial district, and Beijing Daxing International Airport commercial district increased by 5.5 times, 5 times, 2.6 times, and 2.2 times, respectively, compared to the same period last year.

As temperatures rise, nighttime consumption is also heating up. China UnionPay Merchant Services (China UMS) data reveals that the number of transactions and the amount spent on physical goods during the night increased by 57.3% and 57.6%, respectively, while the number of transactions and the amount spent on services during the night increased by 20.3% and 22.8%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.

To further stimulate consumer enthusiasm, the government and enterprises joined forces to launch a variety of promotional activities, such as issuing e-coupons for green consumption and organizing sales campaigns.

State-owned enterprises in Beijing also collaborated to benefit the public and promote consumption. During the holiday, a promotional activity featuring direct sales from state-owned enterprises attracted a total of 50,000 on-site visitors, with the total transaction volume of goods and services online and offline reaching 300 million yuan.
