The 15th edition of China's top 30 cultural enterprises was announced on Wednesday, with two Beijing-based companies, Perfect World and Poly Culture, making the list, with another three earning nominations.
These five Beijing firms exemplify the city's prowess in integrating the cultural industry with technology, developing new business forms in the cultural sector, and generating original content across a variety of themes.
Perfect World, once again included in the list, has evolved into a cultural conglomerate involved in the development and management of films and television shows, games, e-sports, and educational programs. Its products have found favor in over 100 countries and regions. Poly Culture, one of the award-winning entities, has been a significant player in the city's cultural content creation. It boasts the world's largest theater chain and the most prominent art auction and trading platform in China.
Migu, the digital content arm of China Mobile, earned its first nomination thanks to its competitiveness in the realm of mobile internet. The other two nominated companies, Beijing Gehua CATV Network Co., Ltd. and Beijing Gongmei Group, excel in developing creative content and preserving intangible cultural heritage, respectively.
Beijing has long been committed to enhancing its cultural sector through the incorporation of scientific and technological advancements, harnessing the cultural industry to propel the city's overall growth. This integration of culture and technology has greatly facilitated the high-quality development of Beijing's cultural industry.
Data from the National Bureau of Statistics reveals that the value added by Beijing's cultural industry amounted to 450.9 billion yuan ($63 billion) in 2022, accounting for 11% of the city’s GDP. The sector's revenue from content creation and production saw a year-on-year increase of 17.2% to 480.1 billion yuan, achieving both social and economic benefits. Moreover, Beijing outpaces all other cities in the number of audiovisual programs produced, and all 10 of the highest-grossing films in 2022, which collectively brought in 47.4 billion yuan, were made in Beijing.
